- Laments lack of privacy in mails. Death of Vergennes. Convention to meet next month at Philadelphia. Washington has accepted appointment to it. Not optimistic about success of Convention. Only calamity will bring people to senses. Comments on Shays' insurrection and ensuing elections. Comments on Hancock. Encloses resolutions of Congress relative to infractions of Peace. Pictures America's economic growth and move to West. Pessimistic about ability of Westerners to make contribution to peaceful government and civilization. Reports that Vermont not anxious to become 14th State--"Taxes and relaxed government agree but ill".
