[Document, 1781 June 25]
Abstract
Gives Lewis an account of what has happened to Littlepage since his arrival. Encloses Littlepage's letter to him of June 15th (see document 6792) minus Littlepage's attack on Carmichael. Encloses his own letter of June 15th to Lewis Littlepage (see document 6793). In order to stop the rumors that were spreading because of Jay's refusal to second Littlepage's petition , Jay wrote to Floridablanca. E ncloses copy of his letter to Floridablanca, 17 June 1781 mentioning that Littlepage has applied for the King's permission to serve as a volunteer in the intended expedition Jay could not consent because he feels that Littlepage should continue his preparations for law or civil employment, but Jay will not attempt to restrain him. It was not until last Saturday, after the Duke had already left for Cadiz, that Littlepage learned that his request was granted. Since he had not made arrangements for expenses, Jay advanced him the money for the trip to Cadiz and for an outfit and for six months pay as a Spanish Captain. Jay also gave him a letter to deliver to the Ambassador at Aranjuez. Jay encloses a copy of his letter to Montmorin, 24 June 1781. Recommends Littlepage. Jay will no longer take charge of Littlepage, although he will advance him such money as he needs. Lewis should restrict his allowance for expenses. Although the destination of the expedition is unknown, Jay thinks that it will not journey too far. He expects that Littlepage will return in the fall and hopes to have a letter from Lewis by that time. Enclosure: Amount of money paid by John Jay to and for Lewis Littlepage.
