- Abstract
- In spite of Jay's advice, Littlepage is determined to accompany the Duke of Crillon in the ensuing campaign. This will be a way of learning Spanish and of acquiring experience which may one day prove beneficial. Littlepage accuses Carmichael of trying to discredit him with Jay. "Justly incensed and disgusted at this unprovoked and inhumane treatment, actuated by the most honorable and ardent desire of exculpating myself from aspersions equally odious and ill-founded and of obtaining some degree of respect amongst my present deluded acquaintances, I have formed the design of entering, if possible, into the family of His Grace of Crillon, and serving as a volunteer in the intended embarkation from Cadiz."
