Abstract
Letter signed version of document 7001. Apologizes for not writing. Is sorry that Mssrs. Joyer, the bankers, did not live up to his expectations. Their connections with England must be the reason. The situation of the Jays has been very disagreeable, but it might have been worse if they had remained. When the English plundered his house, they might have captured Jay. Morris will pay Francis Child t he money that Jay desires. He had gone to settle at Richmond, but that place is now in the hands of the English. He will probably retreat this way. Praises Kitty (Catharine Livingston). "She is my great favorite and is to be my secretary protempore." The motives for Morris' acceptance of Superintendent of Finances are purely patriotic. Sir James has been in Philadelphia and has asked Morris for employment that would suit him. "This campaign as usual opens to our disadvantage, but I expect it will also as usual close favorably for us." Morris is pleased that the assistance he has given towards delivering supplies at Havana is known and approved by Spain. P.S. Arnold's plot is no longer of any consequence. Very few people escape attack in the newspapers. This personal abuse does more harm than good.
