- Abstract
- Political excesses rend the State of South Carolina, and those who oppose them are denounced as enemies of "Liberty"; many of the best men are disgusted, and ready to retire from public life. Opinion as to the "Western Waters" (Mississippi?) is divided. Perhaps it would be best to agree to some limitation in time on the free navigation, for eventually the population of the western lands will make i t in Spain's interest to have the Mississippi serve as an avenue of commerce. Spain should also realize she is falling into Britain's trap- that the river should be the basis for discord between U.S. and Spain.
