Abstract
Clinton's expedition to the south is reported to have met with disaster, and he has requested reinforcements from New York, which convinces Washington to press the siege of New York. For this purpose Washington has requested four to six ships of the French. Congress is nearly bankrupt. Is surprised that John Jay has written to Floridablanca, as he thought all communications were to go through him. Court about to go into mourning for the dowager electress of Saxony; is coming to town to get his black suit.
