Colonel Laurens is going to South Carolina in an effort to raise two to four battalions of Negroes for the Continental Army. The operations of the enemy are increasing in the South and the use of Negro troops may be the only solution. Thinks Negroes will make good soldiers since they are not stupid and are used to taking orders. Policy and humanity will be served if we give the Negroes their freedo m in return for service in the Army. If we do not, the enemy will. Thinks there should be a draft to obtain enough troops to combat the enemy attack in the southern states. Fears that the situation is becoming very grave.
