- Abstract
- Arnold having failed will now be execrated by the enemy. He was to have delivered up the fort on its being surrounded by the British and then released in order to perpetrate new crimes. A body of 1400 British regulars going to join Cornwallis were captured by our forces. Description of Benedict Arnold's treachery. The Southern Army under General Gates was defeated near Camden, but he is collecting all the forces of the Southern states to oppose the enemy, who under Lord Cornwallis have marched as far as Charlotte, North Carolina. General Clinton has embarked with forces from New York. He is probably bound for Virginia. Necessity of troops and loans from American allies. The New York Gazette has reported that Mr. Laurens was captured and has been taken to Newfoundland. "Congress has advanced me towards the payment of debts contracted on public account two separate sums by draughts on you." Bingham has sent them to European banking houses. Asks Jay to aid him in making certain that they are honored.
