Abstract
Mr. Beverly Robinson appeared before the committee for questioning about his neutrality. John Jay led the questioning. Beverly Robinson claimed he offered his services and they were not wanted so he retired to his farm; denied that his son went over to the enemy. "Mr. Jay: Sir we have passed the Rubicon and it is now necessary every man Take his part, Cast off all allegiance to the King of Great Br itain and take an oath of allegiance to the States of America or go over to the Enemy for we have Declared our Selves Independent." R felt he could not take an oath to the United States and asked if he went to the enemy he could take his effects. John Jay answered yes but hoped R would reconsider. Egbert Benson encouraged Robinson to stay with America and said Robinson had a month or six weeks to decide. Benson would come to see Robinson at that time for his decision.
