- Abstract
- Deliver the letter to Galvez personally. Pay attention to French ambassador. Stress our attachment to French alliance and also our own independence of action. Learn the state of French-Spain alliance, the king's principal confidents and the state of revenue. Learn state of press and get a good translator. Which of the religious orders favored at court . Mention the cruelties of the enemy; also the bravery, growing numbers and accomplishments of the men of the west, but also the many years needed to settle the area near the Mississippi. America expects success from Jay's mission. Act as if we expect immediate recognition (Jay apprehensive about this). Learn views of important characters, secret attempts at peace settlement, any plans for mediation, if other powers are considering entering the war, and if Spain plans military operations in Florida or on banks of Mississippi. Cautious circumspection.
