Carmichael, William, -1795 (Author)
Jay, John, 1745-1829 (Addressee)
Document, 1780 February 21
Fragment of JayÆs original copy of DNA 4085 and CsmH 3333. Parts are in cipher. Discusses Carmichael's meeting with the French ambassador. Believes information was intended for Congress from the French court either through Dr. Franklin or the Count de la Luzerne. There seems to have been a mistake in a letter John Jay sent; wishes to know if came from a "decisive authority." According to Mr. Girard, Mr. Galvez is the minister with whom the United States will do business. GirardÆs knowledge of European courts, especially SpainÆs has led John Jay to accept his opinion on this. If it is an error, it must be make known. Fears that Mr. Carmichael has not sent John JayÆs letters to Mr. Galvez, including an introduction of Carmichael to Galvez.
