- Has been ill all day and confined to the house. Has heard that the Spanish ministry has received 8 million livres via Mr. Guichen's fleet. Believes that there is some connection with this news and letter Vergennes wrote to Jay. News from America is all disagreeable; great complaints about discredited paper money, about commercial monopoly, about jealo usies, slowness and negligence in the conduct of affairs.
