- Has not been able to examine the accounts mentioned in John Jay's letter of June 1779. Letters of Congress to French King received. Progress of Dutch loans. Neufville's "self-interested" behavior has riled Franklin. Sees no hope for success of Dutch loans while United States credit so low. Thinks Portuguese ports may soon be open to American shipping. Success of American privateersmen. Mallebois's project for raising a French corps to fight in America. Former American officers try to persuade French that the United States is really anti-French. Spanish and Swedish Ministers complain of American raids on shipping. Franklin aghast at American attachment to luxury in this crisis. Confusion as to French duties under Franco-American pact.
