- Abstract
- Two Indian runners from Oneida just arrived, and said that eight days ago Sullivan fought a day-long battle near Oneida. Sullivan surrounded the enemy, killed many, and took a large number of prisoners. Those that escaped with Butler ran to the castle, where Butler told them that it would be best to retreat to Niagara. The Indians, however, replied th at he should stay and fight. If he did not, he would pay dearly for their losses. Large numbers of Indians nevertheless did leave for Niagara. Van Dyck hopes that all this may be true. Enclosed in: 18 September 1779, Washington to John Jay.
