- Abstract
- Negotiations with Portuguese Minister concerning a commercial treaty; discussion of grain vs. flour; lumber. Portuguese exports from Brazil not greatly needed by America (tobacco, rice, indigo, etc) but could supply wines, sugar, tea, chocolate, woolens etc. Adams told Minister that if England made a navigation act, trade with Portugal would be increa sed. Portuguese Minister: "Why there is not a nation in Europe that would suffer a navigation act to be made in any other, at this day." discussion of navigation acts. Question of exchange of consuls with America and Lisbon. If there were a treaty there ought to be Ministers, the Portuguese Minister said. P.S. More manifest every day-there is a general scramble for navigation and treaties between European countries.
