- Abstract
- Acknowledges receipt of 26 and 27 September with the resolutions enclosed. Washington began measures necessary to cooperate with Count D'Estaing immediately. The states have been called on for more militiamen and supplies. Sullivan has been requested to leave as few men as possible in garrisons, and Gates has been told to march his men towards West Po int in case D'Estaing should decide to attempt New York. Major Lee is waiting in Monmouth with letters for D'Estaing containing Washington's thought on advantageous plans. The orders of troops bound for South Carolina, have been countermanded. They have been directed to come to New York instead. Congress for its part, might order the three frigates bound for South Carolina to join D'Estaing Congress might also ask Governor Johnson to push the purchase of early Maryland wheat, a commodity the army needs badly.
