Abstract
Acknowledges receipt of 6 June. Because the federalist party endorsed no candidate, but so managed matters to allow individual members to "slip away to the Elections in the guise and capacity of free Citizens, and vote for Mr. Lewis," John Jay "conceived myself at Liberty to be guided by my own Judgment." John Jay voted for neither candidate. Other Fe deralists were also guided by their own judgments, and so the conduct of party members in this election was not uniform. John Jay's statement that no federalist could vote for Mr. Tomkins was predicated on an active state of the party, and not on a passive one.
