- Abstract
- Acknowledges receipt of 22 and 23 February and the papers accompanying them.Washington thanks John Jay for the news from Martinique [filed under 27 January 1779 in the Washington papers]. The enclosed copy of a letter from General Maxwell will inform Jay of the retreat of the British from an attempt on Elizabethtown. The papers relating to an enquiry i nto the conduct of the former Quartermaster General have escaped Washington until now. It will be a difficult matter to execute, for Congress will have to be directed to bring the affair to a military decision. Besides, Major General Mifflin, who has resigned, is no longer anarmy officer, and will probably not be amenable to a military decision. Dft. in hand of Alexander Hamilton. Enclosures: [25 February 1779?], Maxwell to Washington; [before 26 February1779], Papers relating to the conduct of the Former Quartermaster General Trumbull.
