- Abstract
- Through strict economy and loans, Deane has been able to spend 3 years in Europe waiting for Congress to examine his accounts, which still has not been done. Lack of funds has prevented attempts to regain his lost fortune. He has a considerable balance due to him in England, but he has been advised that his reputation would be further ruined if he went there, even though hostilities are suspended. Asks Jay what objections there might be to his journey to England. Also requests that Jay use his influence with Congress to have orders sent out for the examining of his accounts. Also encloses a letter for his brother because his brother has received none of his letters for more than 13 months. He has decided to retire from public life and spend his time trying to restore his reputation.
