The most infamous libel has appeared in London papers asserting that Deane made a fortune of 30 or 40 thousand pounds by purchasing arms at three livres and charging Congress as Louis d'Ors for them. Asks Bancroft to contact Jay and Franklin and persuade them to send Deane a certificate of his innocence. Deane knows who is responsible for the attack, but he thinks that it is for the interest of Ame rica not to vindicate himself at present. Also requests a certificate from Beaumarchais of the price of the arms which Deane contracted and the price at which he charged them to the account of Congress.
