Jay's confidence in John Trumbull caused the British to accept him as
American nominee for the fifth commissioner. On their part the American commissioners
accepted Dr. Swabeye as the British nominee. Trumbull's name was drawn by lot. He looks
forward to a reasonably smooth adjustment of the claims between the citizens of the
United States and subject s of Britain.
