He has long delayed writing Bancroft concerning his son. However further delay would do injustice to Bancroft's confidence and friendship. Jay found the young man to be of good heart and mind, but to lack the circumspection and discretion his education should have given him. For this reason Jay felt it would be wise to place him with Tapping Reeve, where he will have an opportunity to observe the h abits of the more typical citizens of America (i.e. the inhabitants of Connecticut).
