Title:
Document, 1822 April 20
Abstract:
Was appointed a superintendent of highways by John Jay when governor. When superceded by Mr. Edwards, also a superintendent but who, up to that time, had not attended to any of the business, he was afraid it might have been due to a prejudicial report by a Mr. Mathews, nephew of the mayor of New York at that time. Hopes Jay will believe him a sincere friend. His acceptance of the presidency of the Bible Society gives pleasure, even though his bishop is said to "smell too strong of Calvinism." Thinks and hopes that we cannot be saved by our works, but only by grace or favor of God.
