Summary:
Responding to charges in GreenleafÆs paper, printed in New York from March 15th, detailing purported expenses of negotiating the Jay Treaty. Should be informed that Jay received no compensation for his troubles but the costs would be defrayed at public expense. Was given bill for 10,000 dollars that he had to account for on his return. Details expenses and balance at the United States Treasury. The passageÆs expense was due to the fact that there was an embargo and the government had to hire a ship for the purpose. As to other charges -- not worth the time of responding. The people know that foreign and domestic enemies of the United States have spread false accusations against the federal government for years.
