Document, 1809 August 01
Abstract:
Since the abolition of the slave trade, a society has been formed for promoting civilization and improvement in Africa; it consists of members of both Houses of Parliament with the Duke of Gloucester at its head. The cooperation of America is solicited in enforcing its own laws against slave traffic. Also, the cause would be helped if American laws were made to conform more closely to British ones, in particular by subjecting to forfeiture any ship of any country which is fitted out in and cleared from any American port.
