Title:
Document, 1809 November 08
Abstract:
His letter to Wilberforce of 14 April 1806 has obviously miscarried. Cooperation between Britain and America on the slave trade laws is desirable and he will do whatever he can; whether times are now propitious is another question. His remarks on the present scene are just. "To see things as they are, to estimate them aright, and to act accordingly, is to be wise." We are now as the Israelites in Egypt with a Prince worse than Pharaoh; although a prophet offers to deliver us yet many remain in slavery.
