- Jay has received two reliable recommendations that William Livingston be nominated for Surrogate of Kings County. Since he is not sure that Livingston has reformed to the extent that would entitle him to the office, and because of his relationship to Livingston, Jay asks Clarkson for his opinion concerning the man's qualifications.
