- Abstract
- Autograph draft. Writes from London, where he has come here to assist in negotiations with the ministers of Tripoli and Portugal, and by the shortness of his stay, to exert pressure on Britain to conclude a commercial treaty with the United States. As minister of Portugal has been ill since his arrival, this matter has not proceeded as he planned. Made journey at Adams's request. While with Adams, Jefferson and Adams will draw up a report of their activities as commissioners to negotiated commercial treaties. To Jay's question, how far France is willing to support American demands for the Northwest posts, France will doubtless ask how far America is able to go to protect France's possessions in West Indies.
