Abstract
Hamilton's appointment as major general and inspector-general of the army has met with the approbation of Washington. Pickering suggests that some care should be given to insure Hamilton's precedence in rank over all other major-generals. Adam's nomination of his son-in-law, William S. Smith, to be brigadier general and adjutant general of the army wa s most unfortunate, and Pickering opposed it, no matter what damage this may do to his political fortunes.
