Symmes' are busy making maple sugar. It is "very pretty looking sugar, tho I can't be
reconciled to the taste; we give from 15d. to a quarr. of a doll. pr. pd. according to
its quality." Because too many conveniences would have to be sacrificed to have a house
on a very beautiful site directly on the Ohio River, the Symmes's have decided to build
on land which has a view of both the Ohio and Miami Rivers, and of timbered hills. A
level grove is to become a garden-courtyard. The house is to have eight rooms and an
adjoining kitchen. In a kind of run-away wedding last November, Susan's step-daughter
Nancy was married to Captain William Henry Harrison [son of Benjamin Harrison]. Mr.
Symmes objected to the match because Harrison was "breed to no business." Susan herself
finds Mr. Harrison "a sensible, accomplished I believe worthy young
man."
