Abstract
Acknowledges receipt of letter of 12 October 1780 on 30 January. So impressed by Thomson's account of American finances that he gave part of it to the minister and to Franklin, who also remarked on its lucidity and usefulness. John Jay wishes "in my heart that You was not only Secretary of Congress but Secretary also for foreign affairs. I should than have better sources of Intelligence than Gazett es and Reports." John Jay hopes that Congress will try to form no more alliances an unequal partner. He would predict the consequences of this method of communication between foreign ministers and Congress should be found. Congress often does not hear as should from John Jay because his letters have been delayed or even entirely suppressed by the post office. Warns against drawing more bills on him. Autograph letter signed version of 12771.
