Abstract
Has recvd Morse's of, and the one which accompanied the "set of your Geography" for which thanks. Gives Jay pleasure to learn Morse will endeavour to prepare for a history of American Revolution. Patience and research needed: his inquiry should take Morse into natl and state govt matters, civil and military. Such colonial history as relative to Rvltn should be included. As to public and private documents, see JCC as well as reports and letters; see too Journals of Committees of Safety and papers of other standing committees. Also diaries, and private letters offer much to the inquiring and sagacious reader. As to characters, Jay has known those who passed for more, and those who passed for less, than their worth; except the Bible there is not a wise history in the world. Truth and error become mixed not to be separated until the last refining Fire.
