- received Jay's of 1 July; would have brought books and papers in his possession, in answer to John Jay's request to settle accounts, but restrained by belief it his duty to remain in Madrid court, opinion seconded by Montmorin. Has letters from Morris and Livingston, advising of bills drawn by Barclay; Barclay has associated Ridley to him in settling accounts. Requests Jay's opinion as to settling on the spot, such bills or accounts as can be receipted.
