Its enclosure, copy of letter June 1814 from Van Allen, shows Amherst's Tract sold Jan 18, 1814 to pay taxes amounting to 10-11 hundred dollars, redeemable within 2 years by payment of principle and interest. Van Allen's illness prevented him from avoiding the sale. Van Allen contacted Van Schaack who informed Jay of the impending sale, Jay wrote Amherst (copies of these or portions of these letters included in text) warning the sale would be for under land's value.
