- Acknowledges John Jay's letter of August 1780. Little hope for a loan to United States from France. Has asked Franklin to write Adams in the Netherlands where prospects are better. Advises John Jay to "avail" himself "of the favourable dispositions of the Court of Spain & get it to authorize & charge the Marquis to help you in your finance Business Advises John Jay not to consult the Marquis before approaching government for funds.
