- Abstract
- The Church at Rye gratefully acknowledges the Society's favours and wishes "leave to nominate a minister themselves." The Parish Vestry by an act of the General Assembly had called two ministers--"who thought it proper not to accept"--in direct opposition to the wish of "7/8" of the parish for the Rev. Wetmore's son, causing "great discontent" and a breach with those who were invested by law to cal l a minister. Thus it became improper for the congregation to write the Society. Peter Jay asks Johnson to write the Archbishop "in the most favourable light" about the "want of reflection." Now a reconciliation has taken place since Rev. Punderson's stay. Everyone has "conceived a very favourable opinion of him."
