23 April - memorial of a Committee of the Chamber of Commerce to the
Corporation of the City of New York. Suggest that 18 or 20 cannon mounted on field
carriages would afford "prompt means of resisting the attacks of a few inferior
vessels." 30 April - extract from the minutes of the Common Council of the Corporation
of New York City. Resolved that th e Governor be requested to apply to the President of
the U.S. for 16 cannon for use in defense of the city.
