Fountain erected about 1880 by the Berean Baptist Church at the corner of Bedford and Downing Streets, in the Ninth Ward. Notes the barefoot boy and the common drinking cups – now banned by law. Social welfare agencies now affiliated with the Grea ter New York Fund have led in the battle to improve social conditions since this fountain was erected. The Fund is engaged in its 1944 campaign to obtain from business its vital share of $22,250,000 required by 403 hospitals, health and welfare agencies.
