Summary
Wishes Jay had enlarged on his reasons for distrusting the French. If true, the outcome of the negotiation may be very uncertain. Hopes Jay does not carry his suspicions too far especially since Franklin does not agree with them. We must insist on acknowledgement of our independence in the first instance to protect ourselves. Our exclusion from the fishery would only benefit England. We would have to court her favor and this would hurt France. Hopes Jay will reexamine his opinion on French conduct. How did Jay get the Marbois letter?
