- Summary
- The price of tea has risen to new heights, and the English appear determined to monopolize the tea shipments. In all areas of Asia England is becoming a preeminent power, and it is possible the other European powers may combine against her. Between the British and Americans in China there is considerable hostility; although many of the British merchants are of good character, the national prejudices preclude close relations. Recommends the shipment of ginseng to maintain American trade in China. Comments on the misery of people of China, and the inefficiency of the police. He will return to America this year.
