- Long letter about condition in Europe. Most of the courts are not well disposed to the success of the government of the United States. Only the intellectuals look to America as the land of liberty and enlightenment. We should keep ourselves separate from Europe. Try for settlement with Spain on our western boundaries, the navigation of Mississippi and trade with South America. We should encourage settlements on the Ohio and near the Mississippi rivers.
