United States--History--Revolution, 1775-1783; Jay, John, 1745-1829
Summary
Has received Jay's letter of Jan. 3. Colonel Diricks called on his way to
Holland with the recommendation of Governor Trumbull but it did not mention his business
and I do not have the act of the subject so I am in the dark about the matter. One good
reason for not invading Canada with the object of making her our friend is our want of
hard money. They are afraid of paper and would not take it in exchange for provisions
for our troops. Recommends La Luzerne highly both in public and private character.
English influence diminishes in Holland, and the English are apprehensive of war with
Spain. Great preparations here.
