- Summary
- Early in December had decided to apply to John Jay for information concerning Treaty which might ease fears of French Government. John Jay's letter of 25 November, saying that contents of Treaty could not be made known until ratification, however, dissuaded him from making such an application. John Jay's letter of 28 November includes description of contents of Treaty. Therefore, Monroe has reverted to original plan and has sent Mr. Purviance to London to seek such information from John Jay as may help mission to France. French Government will be satisfied with nothing short of actual copy of the Treaty itself.
