- Summary
- Sends Livingston a copy of Marbois' letter to Vergennes, 13 March 1782, and wants him to keep it a secret for the present. France wishes to postpone an acknowledgment of our independence by Britain until Spain's desires are satisfied. They want us to treat with Oswald as colonies and Jay refuses. Franklin does not see the conduct in the same light as Jay. Time only will determine which is right.
