- Summary
- The River St. Croix as indicated on Mitchel's map is that which was considered the eastern boundary of the United States in the Treaty of Peace between Britain and America. Does not believe that the question of the correctness of the map came up. Cannot recollect what other maps, documents, etc. were then used, or whether an act of Parliament respecting the boundaries of Massachusetts was mentioned. Neither can he ascertain whether the copy of Mitchel's map was the same as was referred to at Paris. In his opinion the eastern boundaries of the United States ought to have been the same as those of Massachusetts, but cannot recall if this was explicitly stated. Has reason to believe the River St. John was at that time considered the eastern boundary of the U.S. by "respectable opinions in America."
