- This letter written "to meet some violent representations, which have probably been hurried to Great Britain from Bermuda." M. Fauchet requested that passport be granted him for his dispatched to Paris for Port au Paix (similar passport granted Hammond for London dispatches by way of Halifax.) Passport granted with explicit provision that ship carrying dispatches travel in ballast. Ship was captured by British carrying 150 barrels of powder. U.S. carrying out full investigation of matter. In no way attempt to aid French on part of U.S. Government.
