- Summary
- Reports on his letter to Congress of 20 March and letter and papers of Sir John Temple enclosed with it. Recapitulates circumstances of John Lawrence's case--his service in the Royal Army during the Revolution, his post-Revolution judicial difficulties when landowners of Staten Island brought action against him for trespass and seizure of timber done as a soldier of the King. John Jay feels that Lawrence's case was not presented properly, his rights under the Treaty not being stressed, and that there is no overt violation of the Treaty by the courts in this case. Suggests suitable letter to be sent to British Foreign Office on the matter.
