Summary
The information Pickering requested relates to the period before Jay left for Spain in 1779. Quotes a letter from Floridablanca of 24 February 1780 referring to the good disposition of Spain of which America had already received proof. Also quotes a conference with the same on 11 May 1780 mentioning the King's friendly intentions as might be judged from previous actions. He wrote a letter to the Count on 9 June 1780 asking for information on aids heretofore furnished by Spain to be sent to Congress; however this was not done. On 4 September 1780 in conference with Del Campo and Gardoqui, the former complained that the greater part of the money already advanced by Spain had been laid out in France. Cannot recollect, or by any document decide whether the first foreign aid was from Spain or France; there are doubtless papers in the Departments of State and Treasury which could decide the question.
