- Summary
- It is uncertain whether the President should unofficially comment on the course of his administration. The loss of detachment from public debate might prove damaging; on the other hand it may stop the activities of the partisans. Jay hopes that the President may succeed in carrying the nation through the present crisis, for if he fails the country will fall into the hands of the Jacobins who are likely to subject it to the excesses recently experienced in France. Now that France has adopted a new constitution, perhaps she will be less likely to attack U.S. government, after which it is patterned.
