Summary
Hamilton has been appointed Inspector General with the rank of Major General; worries about the effect since he was not "taken from the line." Enjoys reading John Jay's sentiments and shows how they coincide with his own by enclosing a copy of his letter to Washington of the 6th [NNC: 9507]. The Senate has voted the President's nomination of his son-in-law, William S. Smith, to adjutant general with the rank of brigadier. The President was unaware that Smith "was a bankrupt in fame as well as fortune." Pickering therefore hopes his own interference in the appointment will not be ill-judged.
